A new box & an award

One more abaca project:

Six
Box is 4" square and can be used to hold potpourri.  Love this abaca stuff!

I was the recipient of the Arte y Pico award from Elis.
Arteandpicoaward

Thank you so much Elis!  I have admired Elis' work for a long time now and couldn't be more flattered that she would choose me to receive this award.  I am supposed to pick 5 more to receive this award but I think that so many more of you deserve it that I could never pick just 5!

Brown paper box

Remember this brown paper bag surface I posted earlier this week?

Silver

I decided it would look good as a box:
Img_5863
The fabric that it's sitting on in the photo is the fabric I used for the lining.   Sort of an icy blue/gray silk dupioni.  You can see the turquoise that's on the surface a bit better in this photo than in the one above.   In person you'd swear that the squares on the box are really metal.

Wonderfil Threads

I have been searching for quite some time now for a new line of threads to use.  Up until recently I've been using a popular brand of 40wt rayon thread for all my decorative stitching but have been unhappy with it's performance lately.  I've recently discovered  and started using Wonderfil threads and have been very happy with them.  They have a 30wt rayon thread that I just love and used on this box:

Outside
The outside surface is made with pattern tissue.  The box measures 8" wide x 6" deep by 4" high and is lined in pattern instruction sheets:
Inside
This box will be on display in the Wonderfil Threads booth (#659) in Houston at the Quilt Festival so stop by their booth if you're at the show.

New construction

There's been a lot of new construction going on in my neighborhood lately.  First the Tea house went up next door:

Teahouse

Which is a store house for ...

And then a little further down the street this place popped up:
Candyhouse
Wonder what's being stored in there?

Have a great weekend everybody!

Journal wrap and a new series

I always have a notebook sitting next to my chair in the den so that when an idea strikes I don't have to go looking for a piece of paper to write it down on.  It also helps me to have all my ideas written in one place because often one idea leads to a completely different one and I find it helps me to find a focus when I'm not sure what to work on.  I really like these notebooks because the pages are nice and sturdy and the size is perfect for me.  But good grief could the covers be anymore boring?  So I decided to make a sleeve wrap for mine to jazz it up a bit:

But then of course once the wrap is opened it revealed the same boring black notebook so after a bit of altering, it now looks like this:
Img_5171
Much better!

And here's a prototype for a new series that I'm working on:
Tissuebox
This one actually covers a tissue box.  I know it looks pretty boring but this was to work out the dimensions and the construction - I have a whole list of directions to go with this so stay tuned ...

I'm going to Houston!

I'm going to Houston!  I've always wanted to go to the International Quilt Festival/Houston and I'm very excited about it.  I'll be working in the Mistyfuse booth doing some demos and I think I might even being doing a 30 minute make it and take it class.  I'll know more about that as it gets closer.   If any of my readers are going to be there, I hope you'll stop by and say hello!

I've been working away in the studio on some new projects and should have some new photo's to share in a day or so.  Hope everyone is having a great week!

Coffee and a freebie!

Remember the coffee pot prototype I showed you in the last post?  Well here's the actual product:
Coffeepot
13" high with wooden beads on the wire wrapped handle and wooden beads for feet.  It's hollow on the inside and the top comes off so you could fill it with something - do they make coffee scented potpourri?

The fabric on the outside of the pot is muslin that I dyed with coffee.  I actually dyed up a bunch yesterday:
Fabric_2

And there's nothing like a whole day in the studio by myself to put me in a give away kinda mood so if you'd like a piece of this fabric I'm going to give away 3 fat quarter sized pieces.  Just leave me a comment by Sunday and I'll draw three names on Monday morning.  Last time I did a give away I got 70 comments.  Maybe we can get to 80 this time?  If we do I'll give away 4 pieces :)

Lots and lots of chocolate

Thought I'd give you a sneak peek at one of the articles that I'm working on for the Fibre&Stitch premier issue that starts out with this big pile of yumminess:
Candy

and a peak at the projects inside the article ...
Sneakhalloween

and

Sneaktree

Remember the piece of handwoven fabric that I gave away a few posts back?  Well Sandy sent me a photo of what she made with it:

Svest0002

Doesn't it look great?!  Sandy doesn't have a blog but if you leave a comment here on this post she's sure to see it.

3 drawer box

I've been working on writing up the lessons for the Mixed Media Surfaces class and I realized that when I created the 3 drawer box that blogged about here I negelcted to take photos or notes of the construction process.  So I created another one:

3drawer
I can't wait to see my students versions of this box.  By the way the line up for my Spring/Summer classes is going to be:

Intro to Silk Fusion: starts 5/23
Mixed media surfaces for the textile artist: starts 6/7
Silk Fusion 3d structures: starts 6/29

I believe registration opens for these class on Sunday 4/22 so make sure you're signed up for the joggles newsletter!

and speaking of Joggles I bought some of those new Radiant Rain Shimmering Mists last week.  These are really cool!  I'm not a fan of the twinkling h20's in the little pots, I never get good coverage with them but these ones in the spray bottle I love.  I actually used them to add some color to some cheesecloth yesterday:
Img_3245
Just sprayed it on and waited a little while for it to dry.  The colors are a bit more vivid than what you see here.  I used three different colors: Jasmine, Periwinkle and Fern.   I haven't even used this stuff on paper yet but I'm loving it for coloring fabric!

Hugs & Kisses

I got the idea for this box the other day when I was flipping through one of the million catalogs that get dropped in the mailbox every week.  It was a little pouch filled with chocolates in the shapes of X's and O's and it was called a hugs and kisses pouch or something like that.  I thought well how cute is that, I'd love to send one of those to a special little girl I know but then I thought her mom would be less than thrilled with me if I sent her a whole bag of chocolates.  So I came up with the idea of the hugs and kisses box instead

a box:
Box
filled with some hugs and kisses:
Pieces
And when you take the top of the box, it opens flat and turns into:
Game
a board for playing tic-tac-toe!

Don't forget that the Earth Day Auction begins tomorrow!  Joanna has done a terrific job recruiting a lot of talented artists who have contributed some really beautiful items.  There are several that I have my eye on but I'm not telling which ones!

And check out Terri's website.  She's put some of her pieces on sale this week and there's still one more Go Girl bag available if you act fast!
